Walks Along the Coast

The coast has united the history and the destiny of la Vila Joiosa with the Mediterranean. It has defined our economy, our culture, our character and our rituals. To walk along the coast is the best way to understand this relationship with the sea. Along the two coastal routes we find some of the most emblematic examples of our heritage and some of the most dearly loved corners of our coastline. The routes are sign-posted so that we can easily follow the path and information about places of interest is provided.

Xarco Walk

This route, after crossing the river Amadorio, goes south in the direction of Alicante. Among the special places of interest that you will encounter are the hanging houses, the Shrine of the Virgen de la Salud, the Paradís and Bol Nou beaches and the Xarco watchtower, which is at end of the trail.

  • Approximate time: 2 h. to 3h. — one way—
  • Ascent: small.
  • Available public transport: train and bus in Montiboli.

Cala Walk

After walking down to the beach this route takes us north, following the coastline above beaches and cliffs, in the direction of Benidorm. Some of the most interesting sights along the way are the Arrabal houses, the Bay of Vila Joiosa, a traditional shipyard, the fishing harbour, and the Estudiants, Torres and Racó del Conill beaches. We will also see a watchtower on a spectacular lookout and shortly thereafter the walk finishes in the following cove or “Cala”. However the most important feature of the walk is without a doubt the Roman funeral tower, Torre de Sant Josep.

  • Approximate time: 2 h. to 3h. — one way—
  • Ascent: small.
  • Available public transport: Bus from the Cala.

Recommended equipment: water bottle, comfortable shoes, camera.

If you see any action or behaviour that could damage the historical sites or the environment please inform SEPRONA (96 584 05 25), local police (96 589 00 50), or the local museum (96 589 01 50). The tourist office can be contacted for any further information (96 685 13 71).
